Event Summary:
The United States Blind Golf Association (USBGA) held the 2014 ISPS Handa US Blind Open Championship at Exeter Country Club (www.exetercc.com) located in the tranquil country side of Exeter, Rhode Island. The practice round was held on Sunday August 17 and the two rounds of tournament play were held on Monday and Tuesday August 18 - 19.

During tournament week was also a Junior Blind Golf Clinic.  Several PGA professionals and volunteers assisted each child as they hit balls on the range. The International Open is expecting players from the US as well as Canada, England, Austria, Northern Ireland, Australia, Italy, South Africa, Israel, Japan and South Korea.

Exeter Country Club stretches to 6406 Regulation yards and plays 5706 yards from the Forward tees. ECC is a member of both the Rhode Island Golf and United States Golf Associations.

To make this Championship possible, the organizing committee needed to raise $30,000 from businesses, organizations and individuals. The funds helped pay for tournament and junior clinic expenses including green fees, lodging and some meals.

The 2013 golf season will soon be here. The United States Blind Golf Association is pleased to announce that the 2013 U.S. Blind Open Championship will be held on August 17-22 in Portland, Oregon. The scores from this tournament will hopefully be used for our national championship. The event will take place at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City which is just outside the Portland city limits. The entrance fee of $150 will cover the cost of five nights of lodging at the Monarch Hotel, four rounds of golf, breakfast and lunch each day, welcome reception, Italian dinner on Tuesday night and awards ceremony with a formal dinner on Wednesday. Players should plan to arrive on Saturday, August 17 and depart on Thursday, August 22. Sunday, August 18 will be a practice day at Stone Creek GC followed by a bar-b-q at the course. If your coach would like to play golf with you on Sunday, they may do so at a cost of $35. Monday, August 19 will be a charity golf tournament organized by the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. This will be a scramble with USBGA and IBGA members joining foursomes of business men and women. There will also be a junior clinic for students with vision loss during the first half of the scramble event that could use the help of several USBGA and IBGA players and their coaches. Lunch and a buffet dinner will be provided by the Lions. The USBGA will have its Annual General Meeting that evening at the hotel.

The first day of competition will take place on Tuesday, August 20 at Stone Creek GC and lunch will be provided on the course. Tee times and pairings will be announced at a later date. That evening, dinner will be provided at The Old Spaghetti Factory which is located across the street from the hotel.

The final day of competition will be on Wednesday, August 21. Lunch will be provided on the course and the Awards Banquet will take place that evening at the hotel. Coat and tie are required for the banquet.

The Monarch Hotel is located between the Portland Airport and Stone Creek Golf Course. There is a shuttle from the airport to the hotel and we are arranging transportation to the golf course each day. Renting a car is an option for participants, but should not be necessary. Should you require extra nights at the Monarch Hotel the cost is $118 per night which includes breakfast for two. The Monarch Hotel & Conference Center address is 12566 SE 93rd Avenue Portland, Oregon 97015-9760. The phone number is 800-492-8700 and the website is www.monarchhotel.com. *The deadline for entry is April 30, 2013.

If anyone would like to visit the downtown Portland waterfront there is a light rail system across from the hotel that will take you downtown. The Clackamas Town Center shopping mall is a 10 minute walk from the hotel. This is one of the largest malls in Oregon with a variety of retail stores and restaurants.

As in previous USBGA and IBGA tournaments, the USGA and R&A Rules of Golf and the Modification of the Rules of Golf for Golfers with Disabilities will be followed. You MUST have a current IBGA handicap to participate in this tournament. Please contact Jim Baker at 615-679-9629 or Ron Plath at 503-635-3715 if you have any questions.

Respectfully,

Jim Baker, USBGA President

Ron Plath, IBGA Board Member
